Easy Mom Makeup Routine: A Peek into Lyuba’s Makeup Lesson

Makeup products and a stand up mirror laid out on a towel in front of a lady

Come for a peek at what goes on in a makeup lesson with me. Lyuba had a family photoshoot with Joy of Joy Moon Photography, and she decided to take my Simple Basics Beauty Makeup Lesson. As a mom of a 3-year-old and someone that is very new to the world of makeup was perfect.

Lyuba is still taking covid precautions and we decided it was best to do this outside in the backyard which having lots of natural light would help with her makeup lesson.

We started with a discussion on what she does for her skin on a daily basis, with a baby born during covid lockdown Lyuba hasn’t been doing any makeup, so we started with an easy mom makeup routine for her.

We started with talking about a skincare routine for her, here I recommended a daily cleanser and a micellar water cleanser for the extra crazy days when you just want to drop off to sleep and not take up the extra 10 mins to do your skincare at night. Reminding her that this needs to be a rare thing because you cannot go to bed with makeup and sunscreen on your face!

We talked about toners and moisturizers then it was sunscreen, the most important skin care product along with cleansers. I taught her how much to use (2 finger length), which she was surprised about because she had assumed that with sunscreen, like moisturizers, you need only a dime size amount.

We also talked about makeup brushes and tools hygiene because clean makeup brushes and tools will help keep your makeup look flawless and reduce the risk of acne, rashes, pink eye, etc.

We used the Terri Tomlinson color wheel and fan to narrow down her true undertone to get a better understanding of the type of colors that would be complementary and the ones that will be cohesive. This gives her an idea of the colors for lips, blush and eyeshadow she should get.

Then we moved on to makeup, she wore the outfit she wanted to use for the photoshoot, so she could picture the final look for her day with Joy. I recommended always starting with eye makeup as a rule so she gets into the habit even though we were doing a simple eye look. This just eliminates the stress of eye makeup staining foundation/concealer and her going down the spiral of panic and despair, ending with wiping off the makeup. I chose a soft smokey purple grey that would look good on her, with her outfit.

For a no-fuss eye look, I always recommend stick eyeshadows and doing a wash of color. For hygiene purposes I am scooping the product out of the tube, but I love just drawing on the lid like a crayon and then blending it out with fingers.

We went in with a concealer next and applied to the areas that tend to be dark, Lyuba didn’t have any acne or acne scars, so we focused on bringing light to the face. Again, blending it out with fingers.

I never go in directly on the face with the cream blush because it can sometimes be hard to control resulting in a blush too bright or too spread out. Picking up the blush from the back of the hand helps to warm up the product which then can be blended into the skin easily.

Considering Lyuba’s face shape I told her to apply her blush on the top of her cheek bone and angling it up towards her temple. and we chose a soft rose color blush so it wouldn't overpower the complete look.

Then I showed her the technique to apply mascara for maximum impact (that doesn’t mean putting piles of it on) . That means the appearance of thicker lashes and no need for an eyeliner because she didn’t want the added step of an eyeliner.

Finishing the look off with a lip color, and this is where I told her she can be adventurous and showed her she can go from muted neutrals and mauves to the bright pinks and oranges. Because it was a family photoshoot, Lyuba did not want to pull focus with a bright lip this time, so we opted for a soft mauve lip color.

It was such a pleasure working with Lyuba, and seeing her confidence grow with every step of the process. By the end of our session, she felt comfortable with her easy makeup routine. Her family photoshoot with Joy Moon Photography went off without a hitch, and she looked effortlessly radiant.

If you're looking to simplify your routine or explore the world of makeup in a personalized, stress-free way, I'd love to help you, too! Whether you're preparing for a special occasion or just want to feel more confident every day, a makeup lesson tailored to your needs could be just the thing.
